The Active Ingredients: Joe Carey

Welcome to the latest edition of ‘Active Ingredients’ when each quarter we invite a member of our team to tell us a little about themselves; what brought them to Active, what their role involves and a few fascinating facts about them! This time it’s the turn of Joe Carey, Independent Financial Adviser (IFA)

What brought you to Active?

I already knew director Paul Gibson through a mutual friend, so I was aware of Active’s reputation as one of the leading firms in the area. Not only as a firm of financial advisers, but also as an excellent place to learn – there’s so much experience in one team! This was something very important to me as I was joining as a junior member of the team, studying to become an adviser.

What do you do at Active on a day-to-day basis?

My main role as an IFA is to build long term relationships with my clients. I am helping them reach their financial goals and ensuring they don’t make any rash decisions that can cause costly financial mistakes.

An average day for me would be meeting with a client to review their financial objectives; this could be at their regular client review or simply if their plans or circumstances change.

Are you doing any training/further development?

As a chartered firm, superior knowledge is one of Active’s core strengths, so everyone is encouraged to continue with their own professional development. As an adviser it’s my job to always be up to date with rules and legislation – being regulated and knowing the risks.

Myself and a number of other advisers are currently studying towards becoming chartered financial planners.

What skills have you brought from your previous job?

Before my career in financial services, I worked as a sports coach at a local primary school in Middlesbrough. Skills including planning, communication and delivering lessons have definitely helped in my role as an IFA.

Why do you love working at Active?

Active is great place to work with some excellent people; we have a positive team ethic here and always looking out for one another.

As an IFA, I love helping clients to achieve their goals, especially when I am telling them they can achieve something sooner than originally thought, like retiring early. Seeing the positive impact my advice has on my clients’ lives is so rewarding.

What do you like doing outside of work?

I’ve got a 2 year old little girl, so family time is really important now – our weekends away have definitely changed!

Socialising with friends although it doesn’t happen as often these days!

I like a round of golf but my real passion is football. I am a lifelong Boro fan and season ticket holder #UTB

I love live music – off to Glastonbury this year for the 7th time!

Tell us some final fascinating facts about yourself

I somehow found myself refereeing a professional football game in Zambia whilst travelling there years ago – with no qualifications or experience!

I have been a season ticket holder at Boro since 1994!
