If you invested £100,000 with us on the day we opened – what could it look like now?

As financial planners, we always advise clients that investing is for the long term. It’s a journey filled with promise, patience, and the occasional panic.

From the turn of the millennium (when Active Financial Services was born) until now, investors have ridden a rollercoaster of events that have shaped portfolios, fortunes, and even financial philosophies.

“Worldwide events can have a major impact on markets, such as the financial crash of 2008 when the FTSE plummeted and the UK entered a deep recession. And the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 which led to one of the fastest market crashes in history” says MD Karl Pemberton

But have you ever wondered what your money would look like now if you invested it with us when we first opened our doors back in 2000?

Let’s have a look at what a £100,000 investment made in Summer 2000 would look like now (depending on where you put it). Our graph shows the difference in return between a high (A), medium (B) and low risk (C) investment strategy as well as inflation (D) and the Bank of England base rate (E).

So, what does this tell us?

This data shows that despite volatility, long term investors who ‘stayed the course’ (generally) come out ahead. Economic and political events do matter and continue to shape returns and investor behaviour.

As we move further into 2025, UK investors face a new world: digital assets, climate risk, demographic change, and AI-led innovation. But the core principles of investing that we always have done and will continue to tell our clients, remain the same – discipline, patience, and long-term thinking.

The ride from 2000 to 2025 not only for our clients, but for us as we celebrate our 25th year has been bumpy, but also full of opportunities.  As the famous saying in our industry goes, “whilst past performance is no guarantee to future returns”,  we would predict the next 25 years to be just as eventful and hopefully just as rewarding.

Returns shown in the chart do not include the cost of investing such as: Advice fees, product fees, investment and dealing fees, which can also depend on the type and nature of the investment product. These additional costs will reduce the total returns over the period of investment.

The indices used are traditionally used as benchmarks, and do not represent the returns obtained from a typical investment portfolio – the figures are used for indicative purposes only
